Add Captions That Make Videos Easier to Follow
Captions help viewers follow speech when they cannot hear it clearly or choose to watch without sound. Automatic transcription can provide a draft, but timing, names and meaning need review. Treat captions as part of the content rather than a decorative layer added after everything else is finished.
Why it matters
A small transcription error can change an instruction or reverse a claim. Readability also depends on line breaks, contrast and the amount of text competing with the scene.
A practical workflow
- Generate or write a transcript and correct names, technical terms and punctuation against the actual audio.
- Synchronise captions with speech and split lines at natural phrase boundaries rather than arbitrary character counts.
- Check placement against on-screen controls, faces and important labels so the captions do not hide the demonstration.
- Preview on a small screen and inspect sections with fast speech, overlapping speakers or background noise.
An example
In a software tutorial, the caption should preserve an instruction such as 'do not delete the folder'. Missing the word 'not' creates a serious error even if the rest of the transcript is accurate. Review instructions more carefully than casual filler.
A mistake to avoid
Do not rely on animated word highlighting to compensate for unreadable text. Also distinguish a caption track from text permanently burned into the video; each serves different playback and editing needs.
Try it and check the result
Watch one section with the audio muted and follow the instructions. If meaning depends on an inaudible sound or an uncaptioned speaker change, add the information needed to make that section understandable.
