Backup vs Sync: Why Your Project Needs a Recovery Test

By AIOffers.in editorial team2 min read

Sync keeps locations aligned; a backup supports recovery from an unwanted change or loss. If a deletion or corrupted file is synchronised everywhere, having multiple devices may not help. Design recovery around the information you cannot easily recreate, and test the process before an emergency.

Why it matters

A backup is useful only if you can locate a suitable version and restore it. Code, database records, uploaded files and configuration may require different recovery methods and access credentials.

A practical workflow

  1. Inventory the project data, code and configuration, identifying what is already versioned and what exists in only one place.
  2. Choose recovery methods with appropriate version history, access controls and separation from the active working copy.
  3. Write down the restoration sequence, including required tools and how authorised people obtain access securely.
  4. Restore a small sample into a separate test location and confirm that the recovered project works.

An example

A website repository may preserve code while the actual offer records live in a database and uploaded images live elsewhere. Restoring only the repository would not restore the website's content. Include each essential component in the recovery plan.

A mistake to avoid

Do not store the only recovery instructions inside the system you might lose access to. Also avoid assuming that a successful backup notification proves the contents are complete and usable. Verification requires opening or restoring the data.

Try it and check the result

Pick a plausible failure, such as an accidentally deleted content record, and rehearse recovery without changing production. Record the time, missing steps and any permissions that would delay a real restoration.
