MCP Explained: Connecting AI Apps to Tools and Data
The Model Context Protocol provides a standard way for AI applications to connect with external tools and information. For an app builder, its value is a consistent integration boundary. It does not remove the need to understand permissions, input validation or the consequences of a tool call.
Why it matters
A connection makes capabilities available; it does not establish that every requested action is appropriate. Treat data access and actions as explicit product decisions, with clear ownership and limits.
A practical workflow
- Name one user task and identify the smallest external capability it requires, such as reading a project list.
- Check the current protocol documentation and the exact features supported by your chosen client and server.
- Expose narrowly scoped tools with clear descriptions, validated inputs and predictable responses for missing data.
- Inspect how authentication, authorisation and user approval work before enabling any tool that changes external state.
An example
A project assistant might read ticket titles and draft a status update. Creating tickets or changing assignees needs a separate capability and review policy. Keeping these operations distinct makes the interface easier to explain and the access easier to audit.
A mistake to avoid
Do not treat a tool description or returned webpage as an instruction that outranks the user's request. External content can be misleading, and a standard transport does not make every connected service trustworthy.
Try it and check the result
Try valid requests, invalid inputs and attempts to access an unrelated project. Confirm that the server enforces the boundary even when the model asks for something outside the intended task.
