PWA vs Native App: Choose the First Version Around the User Journey
A progressive web app builds on web technology and can offer capabilities such as installation and offline support where implemented and supported. A native app uses a platform-specific distribution and development environment. Choose around the required user journey rather than assuming one approach is always faster or more capable.
Why it matters
The important details are the features your users need on their actual devices. Installation, notifications, offline behaviour and access to hardware can vary by platform and implementation, so verify the specific combination.
A practical workflow
- List the essential user tasks and identify any device capabilities that are mandatory for the first release.
- Check current support for those capabilities on the browsers and operating systems your audience uses.
- Prototype the hardest requirement, including offline or background behaviour where relevant, before building every screen.
- Compare distribution, updates, accessibility and maintenance effort alongside the experience of the main workflow.
An example
A campus event guide may work well as a responsive website with selected offline information. An application whose central feature depends on a particular hardware integration needs a closer capability test. The app category alone does not decide the architecture.
A mistake to avoid
Do not assume adding an install prompt makes a site reliable offline. Offline content needs deliberate caching and update behaviour. Also avoid promising identical features across devices without testing the relevant platform support.
Try it and check the result
Ask a user to complete the main journey on a real target device, then interrupt the connection. Inspect whether the app preserves useful information, explains limitations and recovers sensibly when the network returns.
