Serverless vs a VPS for a Small Project
Serverless services manage much of the runtime infrastructure, while a virtual private server gives you a machine to configure and maintain. Choose around the workload, operational skill and failure recovery you need. A low advertised price does not describe the whole responsibility of either option.
Why it matters
A project with occasional short requests has different needs from a long-running process or a specialised runtime. Understand the execution model before choosing the hosting approach that looks simplest in a tutorial.
A practical workflow
- Describe request patterns, background work, storage needs and any runtime requirements your application cannot change.
- Check the candidate platform's current execution limits and supported features against those requirements.
- Estimate both service charges and the work needed for updates, monitoring, backups and incident recovery.
- Deploy a representative slice and test normal use, a traffic burst and a failed dependency before committing.
An example
A public resource directory may fit a managed request-based service. A process that needs a persistent local daemon may require a different arrangement. The right choice follows the actual process behaviour, not whether the project is called an MVP.
A mistake to avoid
Do not treat serverless as 'no operations' or a VPS as automatically cheaper. Both need secure configuration and monitoring. Runtime restrictions, maintenance time and data-transfer costs can change the comparison substantially.
Try it and check the result
Document how you would update, restore and pause the project on each option. If one approach requires skills or controls you do not have, include that gap in the decision rather than hiding it behind the monthly price.
