Plan for Cloud Credit Expiry Before Your Prototype Depends on It
Temporary cloud credits are useful for exploration, but the project needs a plan for the day the balance or eligibility ends. Decide which resources are essential, what they cost without the grant and what data must be preserved. Treat expiry as a planned transition rather than a surprise deadline.
Why it matters
A balance can expire before it is exhausted, and service coverage can differ between credit programmes. The useful number is your expected ongoing workload after the promotion, not only the initial credit headline.
A practical workflow
- Record the official expiry and service exclusions, and set reminders early enough to make a deliberate decision.
- Measure resource usage during the prototype and estimate the same workload at the relevant paid rates.
- Choose whether to continue, reduce the workload, migrate or shut down, with clear ownership for that decision.
- Export essential data and verify the cleanup or transition steps before the final week of access.
An example
A student demo may need to remain online only for a presentation. Export its database and keep a local recording of the result before retiring paid-capable resources. A public service with active users needs a more deliberate continuity plan.
A mistake to avoid
Do not assume remaining credits survive every account change or that closing the main app removes related resources. Check the specific programme and account behaviour on the provider's current official pages.
Try it and check the result
Rehearse the chosen transition with a small sample: restore an export, deploy a reduced version or confirm the resource inventory after cleanup. A written plan is stronger when its critical steps have been tried.
